FREE THOUGHT FM is a performance based artwork, by artist Garrett Phelan, that examines the idea of ‘FREE THOUGHT.’ It asks about ‘Access to Education’ and explores 'Class Inequality' in the city of Dublin, Ireland.
Access to educational resources is unequal. The current system needs to change.
FREE THOUGHT FM took place in The Douglas Hyde Gallery in Trinity College Dublin, but spread far beyond its walls. FREE THOUGHT FM is an artwork which included; a gallery exhibition, an independent radio station, a dedicated poster and social media campaign across the city and a booklet

At the core of the project was the 30-day temporary licensed FM radio station where Garrett Phelan performed and transmitted live from the DHG. FREE THOUGHT FM existed as an open forum where the issues of ‘Access to Education’ and 'Class Inequality' in Dublin were discussed in depth with over 150 contributors from all backgrounds and ages. Garrett and FREE THOUGHT FM team members -Michelle Kinsella, Sophie Mullervey, Calvin D'arcy Kanda and Tamara Halawa– spoke daily with invited guests and members of the public.
The live broadcast performance ran from 25 March until 23 April on 105.2 FM (Greater Dublin Area only) and nationally/internationally online at
www.freethoughtfm.com.
The FREE THOUGHT FM exhibition began on 15 March, and ran until 25 May 2019.
FREE THOUGHT FM was funded through the Arts Council’s Making Great Art Work Open Call Award (2018), an Arts Council initiative which funds ambitious, one-off artistic projects by some of Ireland’s best artists and arts organisations.
